How big a garage heater do you need in Saskatchewan?

BTU sizing, gas vs. infrared vs. electric, and what to check before you buy.

A heater that's fine in Vancouver will barely keep up in Saskatoon. Our design temperature is around −35 °C, so the heater has to replace the heat lost through the walls, ceiling and — most of all — the overhead door.

As a starting point, an insulated double garage usually needs about 45,000 BTU of gas heat, an insulated triple garage 60,000–75,000 BTU, and an uninsulated or tall shop far more. We confirm it with a quick heat-loss calculation.

Power-vented unit heaters like the Modine Hot Dawg are the most popular because they vent through the wall. Ceramic infrared heaters like the Re-Verber-Ray DR series recover fastest after the door opens because they warm the floor. Electric heaters are the simplest for small garages without gas.

Every gas heater needs a properly sized gas line, venting, clearances and a TSASK gas permit — we handle all of it.
